By Alan King

A diverse array of fauna inhabit the magical plane of Bloomburrow. From the jackdaws in the sky to the frog folk in the rivers, there is adventure around every corner. This animal kingdom is teaming with wildlife both familiar and those peculiar.

A well renowned hero to these parts is one furry European badger. Gruff and old, this badger folk stands a  towering beast above the rest, imparting an eminence that rivals those of the calamity beasts themselves. Warrior armour, like heavy scales, cover his shaggy unkempt fur. No helmet but just an eye-patch on his head suggests a hard-headed creature or one with a sense of humour. Although great in reputation, few have observed this  particular badger in person due to its quiet nature. This broad shouldered and white striped hero, riddled in the scars of battles past and in the embrace of danger, has its origins in the Root Maze. Devouring insects and worms, it has had minimal social interaction, rendering it a silent giant.

Do not let this silence fool you, to think a cold-hearted monster lurks beneath its fur and armour. Contrary to this impression, it has been gifted the name of Hugs for being a gentle and big-hearted hero of the children.

As we near the end of summer, we travel though the forests of Bloomburrow, the air is full of insects and the  cobwebs glisten in the midday sun. We have stumbled upon an odd pair. Emerging from the undergrowth, the badger Hugs and his first friend the lizard Gev on another adventure. These rapscallions, seldom noticed far from one another, trample with a sense of purpose. Their focus is captivated by something in the distance.

A moose calamity has moved into the territory. Feeling cornered, Hugs ruffles his hair and lets out a frightening  growling roar. He digs up the soil to aerate and obscure the calamity’s site. Then the charge. The collision of claws with antlers and hooves resonates throughout the woods like the cracking of trees when they break. A clash of goliaths but only one can be the victor. Hugs remains.

Creeping out from a little hole, hidden in the ground, our little mercenary appears and cautiously approaches to aid his friend. Today they have survived but tomorrow they may not be as lucky.

Hugs, a beacon of light in the groves of Bloomburrow, illuminating even the night sky.
